Consider Henry Bemis' situation in the Twilight Zone episode "Time Enough at Last." Answer all of the following questions.
1. Explain irony. Give an example of an ironic situation.
2. Imagine that you were in Henry Bemis' situation. What would you have felt and done if you were the last person alive on the planet?
3. What would you do if you had all the time you needed to do whatever you wanted? Why?

1) Irony is when something happens that’s different from what is expected or thought to be like. For instance, say a fire station was burned down. You expect fire fighters from fire stations to put out fires, not be on fire. The burning of the fire station is what is ironic.
2) If I were the last person alive on the planet, I would probably end up having a panic attack and crying, then trying to find a painless way of dying. (I don’t like pain, so I’d like to die quickly and painlessly. Then again, who likes pain?) I don’t cope well when I’m alone, really and ultimately alone, and I’d be terrified out of my mind. If there was no means of dying… Well, there’s no one else out there in the world, supposedly, so I can’t get rescued, but I’d try (however futile it is) to find someone else living in the wreckage. I’d rather not get along and argue with someone I don’t really like than be alone, the only one alive on the planet. The thought’s depressing. If there really was no one else, I’d try to find a way to occupy myself until I was utterly bored of it, then I’d curl up somewhere and wait to die. (How sad and pathetic.) I’d be pretty messed up, like Pony after Johnny and Dally died, since all the people important to me were all dead, and I’d cry a lot.
3) If I had all the time I needed to do, I’d probably go to a library and read, or get a computer and go on the Internet, since those are things I enjoy but don’t always have the time to do. Also, I’d spend time with people I love. It makes me happy to be with my friends and family. I also would listen to music, since I like doing that. :) But something important is, I need someone else to be with me. I don’t like being alone.
1. Irony is something that is sarcastic, or when something comes out different from what someone thought it would turn out to be. If a firestation were to burn down, it would be an ironic situation.
2. If I was in Henry Bemis’ situation, I would have felt stranded and unsure why I would be the only one alive. I would have gotten to trying to survive without modern electronics and other items, and get to actual shelter. The most I’d do at this point would be surviving.
3. With all the time I would need to do whatever I wanted, I would draw. Drawing is a hobby for me and it helps me take my mind off things. It also lets me express my ideas, not in a way of speaking, but more in a way of colors and symbols.
1) Irony is something that happens which is not what is supposed to happen. Sometimes it can be hypocritical. For example when a police officer is speeding and gets a ticket. The police officer getting the ticket is ironic because usually the police officer is the one giving the ticket.
2) If I were the last person on earth and all the people and technology like computers and video games were gone, I would freak out. But, I would look for food just as Henry Bemis did. Then I would build a shelter to protect myself from the elements and last I would look for something to do. I don’t think I would start reading because truthfully I don’t really enjoy reading. I would maybe look for a usable car and joy ride all over town until the gasoline runs low. Then I would truly be bored.
3) If I had all the time in the world to do something and nothing was destroyed in the world, I would probably draw my life away. I would do this because usually, I don’t have much time to do my hobbies. I would maybe draw the barren landscape since there would be something to draw everyday.
1. Irony is when something that isn’t expected to happen happens. It is usually related to humor. An example is in “Collecting Team.” The group that goes to collect animals from various planets gets stranded on the one planet where many exotic animals exist. In a sense, they are being “collected” themselves by the animals on the planet. It is ironic because they expected to collect, but ended up being the collected.
2. If I were in Henry Bemis’s position, I would feel very alone. Maybe I would get caught up in the moment, as in “I can do anything I want now,” but soon I would realize that there is no fun or meaning in the world if I’m alone. I would feel very afraid of what would happen to me. Breaking out into tears, running around looking for people who were also alive and stranded, and going hysterical all sound like things I would do if I were in Henry Bemis’s situation. If there were no others that I could find at the moment, I think I would probably either commit suicide or pack up and go off to search for others who were also in the same situation.
3. If I had all the time I needed to do whatever I wanted, I would most likely not want to have all of that time because nothing would be spontaneous and exciting. Everything would be boring and planned out and expected because I know I have all the time I need. It would be like when the fictional characters in books you read about who live forever want to die, but every mortal person wants to find a way to live forever. There wouldn’t really be anything to live for anymore because there would be no exhilaration or excitement or anything like that. Bottom line is, it would be really boring and no one, including me, would want to live in a boring world.
1) Irony is to convey a meaning that is the opposite of what you thought would happen. One example is if someone wins a big money prize on a reality show by eating a strange food, such as fear factor, and then die the next day because of their allergic reaction to the food. Another example would be a no-smoking sign on a tabbaco producing factory.
2) If i was Henry Bemis, i would first be extremely afraid and panicked. After i calmed down, i would try to find shelter and food to help me survive. I would probably not have tried to kill myself like Henry Bemis and would have maybe tried to find contact with other people in the world. After a while, I would become more used to my situation and feel released from all the restrictions i had on me before. I would then spend my time relaxing, free from the stress of the world. However eventually, i would become extremely bored from my lifestyle, and because there would be nothing else for me to do, i would spend my life rotting away, never achieving anything.
3) If i had all the time to do whatever i wanted, i would first sleep and relax for a long time, becuase I wouldn't have to have work and school to worry about. I would also be watching all the shows i never had the time to watch on my computer. I would go to amusment park or a movie theater every day, and be able to stay up all night and wake up in the afternoon.
